We are delighted to have been awarded 5th place in the public competition for the Bützi school extension in Egg.
The Bützi school complex is to be extended with a new replacement building to include rooms for sports, day structures, a music school and a multi-purpose hall.
The project extends the school complex with a compact volume and interferes minimally with the existing building. The size, position and structure of the new building create an integrative ensemble that largely preserves the existing outdoor spaces. The symbiotic design of the outdoor space creates a multi-layered mosaic of open spaces that emphasises closed cycles.
The simple and clear building structure offers great scope for everyday use, an attractive spatial landscape and long-term flexibility. The school, kindergarten, music and sports areas are spatially differentiated and connected to each other via spacious meeting zones. The result is functional clusters that can be used individually for operational purposes and are also interconnected.
The structure of the volume and the façade create a harmonious ensemble from a distance, while the relief of the façade is reminiscent of high-quality craftsmanship at close range. The façades consist of prefabricated lightweight timber frame elements, while the structural concept is based on a modern, sustainable timber construction method. The good surface-to-volume ratio, the appropriate proportion of glass, the external solar shading, the linear insulation perimeter and the quality of the building envelope minimise heat loss in winter and, above all, external heat loads in summer. Together with the use of renewable energies, Minergie-Eco materials and a coherent operating concept for the business, the result is a building that fulfils the SNBS standard in addition to its urban planning and architectural qualities.
